Self-Care for Hairstylists: Small Shifts That'll Change Your Career

mindset self care

Let's talk about something we don't discuss enough in our industry: taking care of ourselves.

We're so good at making everyone else feel beautiful, confident, and cared for. We listen, we create, we problem-solve. We're often our clients' therapists, their hype squad, their safe space.

But when it comes to our own well-being? We tend to put ourselves last on the list.

I've been there. I've pushed through the exhaustion, ignored my aching feet, skipped lunch, and told myself "I'll rest later." And you know what? That approach doesn't work. Not if you want a long, sustainable, joyful career in this industry.

Self-care isn't a luxury - it's essential. And it doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming.

Here's what I've learned after years behind the chair: it's the small, consistent things that make the biggest difference.

The Simple Self-Care Practices That Changed Everything

Stay Hydrated Throughout Your Day

I know, I know - you've heard this a million times. But seriously, when was the last time you actually drank enough water during your shift? Dehydration affects everything: your energy, focus, creativity, even your mood. Keep a water bottle at your station and take sips between every client. Your body (and your clients) will thank you.

Protect Your Body with Proper Ergonomics

Your body is your most important tool. Invest in an anti-fatigue mat - your feet and back will feel the difference immediately. Use a stool when you can, especially for detail work. Pay attention to your posture. These small adjustments prevent the chronic pain that ends too many careers in our industry.

Take Short Breaks Between Clients

Even just 2-5 minutes can reset your entire energy. I love using this time for short meditations or tapping techniques. It helps me clear the last client's energy, center myself, and show up fully present for the next person. You don't need a meditation app or fancy tools - just a few deep breaths and a moment of stillness works wonders.

Keep Protein-Rich Snacks On Hand

Skipping meals or relying on sugar crashes isn't sustainable. Keep nuts, protein bars, or other nourishing snacks at your station. Stable blood sugar = stable energy = better work and a better mood.

Limit Chemical Exposure

We work with chemicals daily - it's part of the job. But we can be smarter about protecting ourselves. Ensure proper ventilation in your space. Wear gloves when mixing color. Use masks when working with strong chemicals or doing treatments with heavy fumes. Your lungs and skin deserve protection.

These aren't big, overwhelming changes. They're simple practices you can start implementing today.

You Deserve to Feel Good

Here's what I want you to remember: you can't pour from an empty cup.

The better you take care of yourself, the better you'll be able to serve your clients, grow your business, and actually enjoy this beautiful career you've built.

In my latest YouTube video, I walk through each of these self-care practices in more detail, sharing exactly how I've built them into my daily routine without adding stress or extra time.

Because you deserve to feel as amazing as you make your clients feel.
